Bioanalysis Rising Star Award: an interview with the 2024 winner

In this interview, Tomislav discusses the work that led to his nomination, what he finds most inspiring about being a bioanalytical scientist and why it is important that awards like the BRSA exist. For those thinking about nominating themselves or a colleague for the 2024 award, Tomislav encourages young bioanalytical scientists to be brave and put themselves out there!

The BRSA is an annual award that recognizes and promotes the work of talented early-career scientists, offering researchers a springboard to help establish themselves in the exciting world of bioanalysis. This year’s winner, Tomislav Caval, Senior Scientist at Regeneron (NY, USA), was nominated by Klaus Lindpaintner (Bruker; MA, USA) who commented:

“Tomislav stays keenly abreast of the latest developments in the field, always being first to bring new research to the team’s attention. His ability to integrate this knowledge into his work was truly remarkable. Tomislav is not only technically proficient but also a great team player. He has a knack for explaining complex concepts in a way that is easy for anyone to understand, which fostered a collaborative and productive environment in the lab. Tomislav is a dedicated glycobiologist with a bright future. I am confident that he will continue to make significant contributions to the field and will become a recognized leader in the field.”

As the winner of the BRSA, Tomislav presented his work at the 17th European Bioanalysis Forum (EBF) Open Symposium, held in Barcelona (Spain) on 20−22 November 2024. He also received a 1-year subscription to Bioanalysis and USD $1000, courtesy of award sponsors Waters Corporation (MA, USA), a leading provider of analytical instruments and software in liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry and thermal analysis.

On receiving the award, Tomislav commented:

“I am grateful to be receiving the Bioanalysis Rising Star Award. I am especially thankful to my mentors and everyone who took time to vote for me. As someone who just starting my journey in bioanalysis, this recognition is incredibly encouraging and motivates me to continue exploring and contributing to this exciting field.”

Tomislav won the public vote after three finalists were shortlisted by the judges. The other finalists were Monique Ryan (Australian National Phenome Centre; Perth, Australia) and Karan Agrawal (Johnson & Johnson; NJ, USA).
