Regarding the Exploris 120, August Specht (Vice President, Research and Development, Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry, Thermo Fisher Scientific), commented: “Scientists running small molecule studies and applications in areas such as metabolomics, environmental analysis, metabolite identification, forensic toxicology and anti-doping, require complete sample coverage in their analyses, without compromising productivity. The Orbitrap Exploris 120 mass spectrometer was designed specifically for laboratories to safeguard their current assays and enhance their provision of high-throughput and differentiated services, while simultaneously minimizing required training and method development times.

The two new high-resolution mass spectrometers, the Orbitrap Exploris 240 and the Orbitrap Exploris 120, are the latest to join the Thermo Fisher Scientific Orbitrap Exploris portfolio which launched in 2019 with the Exploris 480. Both the Exploris 240 and Exploris 480 high-resolution mass spectrometers are compatible with the Thermo Scientific FAIMS Pro interface which facilitates the identification of proteins and peptides.

Alongside the new high-resolution mass spectrometers, Thermo Fisher Scientific have released a suite of new software functionalities to facilitate data acquisition and processing.

Updated Proteome Discoverer software utilizes deep learning tools to improve mass spectra prediction and peptide identification. New BioPharma Finder software aims to improve intact protein analysis, sub-unit mass analysis, peptide mapping and oligonucleotide analysis.

The latest iteration of Compound Discoverer software is designed to support small molecule researchers through enhanced characterization capabilities. The latest Xcalibur software brings Thermo Fisher’s AcquireX data acquisition workflow to the Orbitrap Exploris range of high-resolution mass spectrometers, enhancing opportunities for automation.

Thermo Fisher Scientific also highlight the potential benefits of the mzCloud. A large cloud-based mass spectral fragmentation library that could be used in small molecule application to facilitate compound identification.

The new high-resolution mass spectrometers and range of enhanced software functionalities are being showcased at the virtual online event, ASMS 2020 Reboot. Thermo Fisher Scientific hope that their new mass spectrometry systems and software will enable scientists to broaden their mass spectrometry-based research by improving workflows in proteomics, biotherapeutics and clinical applications.
