Neelam is a highly driven and passionate Senior Scientist in Biomarker Assay Sciences at UCB. She holds a PhD in Multiplexing Immunoassay and has more than 14 years of experience supporting numerous preclinical and government research programs. She is an expert in complex ligand binding assays/immunoassays, biomarkers and gene therapy bioassay validation.
What motivated you to pursue a career in science and how have you overcome challenges along the way?
A passion for understanding the world of Bioscience and how it helps patients’ condition improvement, as well as a desire to contribute to knowledge motivated me to pursue a career in science. I encountered challenges throughout my journey in science, such as complex research problems and the need to continuously adapt to evolving technologies. Overcoming these challenges involved perseverance, collaboration with peers, seeking guidance from mentors and staying abreast of the latest developments in the field. Embracing a growth mindset and learning from failures has been crucial in navigating the dynamic and demanding nature of scientific pursuits.
Are there specific areas within your field where you see opportunities for more women to make significant contributions?
Women have the potential to make valuable contributions to science and scientific research. Their unique perspectives, innovative thinking and diverse approaches can lead to groundbreaking discoveries and advancements across various scientific disciplines. Additionally, their presence in research environments can foster inclusivity and collaboration, ultimately improving the quality and impact of scientific endeavors. With increased support and opportunities, women can significantly shape the future of scientific innovation.
How important has mentorship been in your career, and have you had any notable mentors or role models who influenced your journey?
Mentorship has been a critical aspect of my career. I have had several mentors who have provided guidance, support and encouragement along the way. During my career journey, my family has been one of the great supports and mentors to my success. Also, in my professional network, I would like to thank my current team at UCB, who have greatly supported me.
Are there specific policies or initiatives that you believe could enhance and support the work of women in scientific careers?
Several policies and initiatives could enhance and support women’s work in scientific careers. Targeted mentorship programs, diversity and inclusion training, and flexible work arrangements to support work-life balance are excellent family-friendly policies at UCB, including hybrid working and generous parental leave. Such initiatives can help create an environment where women can thrive and contribute significantly to the scientific community.
