An interview with Shelby Barnett – the 2022 BRSA winner

Bioanalysis Zone, along with the award sponsor Waters Corporation, has named Shelby Barnett (Newcastle University, UK) the 2022 winner of the Bioanalysis Rising Star Award. The BRSA is an annual award that recognizes and promotes the work of talented early-career scientists, offering researchers a springboard to help establish themselves in the exciting world of bioanalysis.

In this interview, Shelby discusses where her inspiration came from when becoming a bioanalytical scientist and after winning the award, Shelby describes the overwhelming support and interaction from individuals on social media supporting her and her research. For those thinking about nominating themselves or a colleague for the 2023 award, Shelby encourages new scientists to not be afraid to put themselves out there and push the work that they are passionate about forward – in essence, to just go for it!

This year’s winner, Shelby Barnett, Post Doctorate working with Newcastle Cancer Centre Pharmacology Group at Newcastle University, was nominated by Professor Gareth Veal (Newcastle University), who commented: “Shelby has published multiple key publications in the past year, which highlight how bioanalytical work can directly impact patient treatment […] A superb example of how the appropriate translation of bioanalytical assay development can make a significant real-world impact and very much a future leader in this area.”

On receiving the award, Shelby commented: “I am delighted to be this year’s BRSA winner. Thank you to my family, friends, colleagues and fellow bioanalysis buffs that voted for me on this campaign. This award has given me a wonderful opportunity to showcase my work globally, and for that, I would like to thank the award sponsors.”

As the winner of the BRSA, Shelby will present her work at the 15th European Bioanalysis Forum (EBF) Open Symposium, held in Barcelona (Spain) on 16−18 November 2022. She also receives a 1-year subscription to Bioanalysis and US $1000, courtesy of award sponsors Waters Corporation (MA, USA), a leading provider of laboratory solutions and software in separations science, mass spectrometry and thermal analysis.
