Advanced therapies
Advanced therapies are a new class of medical treatments that encompasses tissue engineered products, cell therapy and gene therapy. These therapies aim to repair, replace or regenerate damaged cells, tissues or organs to treat complex diseases and conditions. Advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) are advanced therapies that are subject to specific legal and regulatory standards and can be used to treat a range of diseases including Alzheimer’s disease, cancer and muscular dystrophy.
Gene therapy – A therapeutic technique that delivers gene or oligonucleotide sequences into cells to modify genes and treat disease. Gene therapies can work via several mechanisms: replacing a disease-causing gene with a healthy copy of the gene, inactivating a disease-causing gene that is not functioning properly or introducing a new or modified gene into the body to help treat a disease.
Cell therapy – Cell therapy refers to the administration of living cells into a patient for the replacement or treatment of diseased or dysfunctional cells.
